Broughton Moor

Description:  My client found a piece of  Broughton Moor slate that she had fallen in love with whilst shopping for her kitchen worktops. The brief was to design a table base to support the 2m x 1m slate but not to look too heavy.  To enable flexibility over seating, she ideally wanted the legs not to be at the corners. The seats themselves were to be four benches. The base was designed around the traditional H-frame table but needed to be a lot stronger and stable to support the weight. It is in effect two frames leaning in towards each other; the ends also lean in slightly. This creates an incredibly stable structure as well as a large number of compound tenon joints. The lattice work top spreads the weight evenly across the structure and adds the necessary support for the slate. The overhang of the table top is echoed in the seat pads on the benches. The radius on the corners is also repeated on the bench corners and back rests.
