North Coast Wine

Project details

Client : North Coast Wine Bude

Brief : To design and fabricate fencing to create an outside area for the wine bar. The outside area was previously open to pedestrians and not able to be used by the bar. The design I created made the most of the existing curved walls and front step. The owner was keen to use local trades as much as possible so the timber, steel work and powder coating were all sourced locally.

The oak had to be steam bent to create the curves and bolted in place to the steel supports. The bar’s situation near the sea and with a south facing terrace, means the fencing would be very exposed to the elements, making the selection of materials really key. As the timber has aged, it has turned a burnished silver colour, which is accentuated by the light playing across the curved forms.

Key project points :

+ locally sourced oak;

+ steam bent forms to echo the existing walls;

+ locally fabricated steel work;

+ designed to work in the elements (salty sea air and strong direct sunlight );

+ fixed budget;
